On a warm sunny evening families enjoyed time in the park
(blissfully unaware of the traffic on SH1). Folk enjoyed the brilliant
music, having photos with Santa and having the freedom to sing and
lead a conga line. Thank you Kaiwaka Can and team for an event
that will be here
again.

KAIWAKA WEATHER
November
At our place the birds are all busy nesting and feeding babies.
We had the last clutch of ducklings turn up at our place about 3
weeks ago, which is quite late in the year.
The month of November started out with a spell of eight days without any
moisture, this was after two days at the end of October without any rain. We
then had 35ml over 3 days and then 39ml two days later. There was another 4ml
a couple of days later then we got a huge 71.5ml over 2 days. Later in the month
we got another 5.5ml over 5 days.
The total rainfall for the Month of November at our place was 155ml over 10
days.
Derek recorded 141ml over 13 days in the Hakaru Valley.
The most rain recorded at our place in the month of November was in 2022 with
a recording of 294.5ml over 19 days.
The least rain recorded at our place in the month of November was in 2010 with
a recording of 24.5ml over 6 days.
Have a wonderful and safe Christmas everyone. You will hear from me next
year. Take care, Karen.

"
Advent is that tender season
when the world seems to hold its
breath
- and not just because we’re
trying to untangle last year’s Christmas
lights without losing our top. It’s a time
of waiting, wondering, and quietly
hoping that God might slip into our
world once again in ways
both surprising and familiar.
Christmas, of course, is the
grand reminder that He
already has. God didn’t
choose a palace or a podium
but
a
manger-because
apparently the Almighty is
quite comfortable working
with whatever we’ve got,
even if it’s drafty, messy, or smells
faintly of livestock. That alone should
give humanity hope.
Since Francis of Assisi introduced
the world to Christmas 800 or so
years ago (rather than celebrating only
Easter as the most significant Christian
celebration), Christmas has softened
hearts,
inspired
generosity,
and
reminded us that divine love often
arrives small, fragile, and needing to be
held. Advent tunes our souls to notice
these quiet miracles. It whispers, “Look
again. Light has shifted the darkness.”
And every year, in spite of the chaotic
and polarizing world we live in, I still
think humanity becomes just a
little more human-more patient,
more forgiving, more willing to
share the last piece of pavlova
(well…uh ...that may be the
wrong example). The impact of
Advent and Christmas is not
found in grand gestures but in
the daily choice to welcome
God’s presence into ordinary
lives. It is a celebration of
Christ being born in us and the world
around us again and again and again.
Let us show that by caring for each
other, especially for those who are less
fortunate than us, our elderly, our
children, our environment, and our
animals.
May Emmanuel- God with us-
continues to change us, one imperfect
manger at a time."
~ Reverend Henk Lups

KERBSIDE RUBBISH AND RECYCLING
With Christmas approaching and heaps of food and presents
arriving, this is the time to consider what to recycle.
From the beginning of 2024 kerbside recycling was
standardised for all of NZ. These changes were a part of a
central government effort to reduce contamination in our
recycling and make it less confusing than the different rules
previously existing between districts.
The only materials now accepted in kerbside recycling bins/
bags are:
Plastic bottles, trays and containers marked with recycling
symbols 1, 2 or 5 ONLY
Glass bottles and jars that are brown, green, blue or clear.
Paper and cardboard (including pizza boxes with food
scraps removed)
Aluminium and steel tins and cans.
Previously Aerosol cans and aluminium foil or foil trays were included in the
recycling bags but are no longer permitted. Instead, they need to be taken to one
of the Council depots.
It is important that the recycling is clean as dirty recycling is sent to landfill and
one dirty item in a bag can contaminate all of the rest!
Also there should be NO lids, caps or bottle tops placed in a yellow recycling
bag for kerbside collection.
Check
out:
https://sustainablekaipara.org/resources/resources-and-guides/
recycling/ - this has our Council’s recycling guide. This can also be found at:
https://environment.govt.nz/what=you-can-do/campaigns/recycle/
HAKARU RESORT is at 620 Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Road, Kaiwaka

KAIPARA DISTRICT COUNCIL
Please note:
ONLY official pre-paid blue bags for rubbish and official pre-paid
yellow bags for recycling will be collected
Make sure your blue and yellow bags are kerbside by 8:00am on collection
day, as collection times could differ from usual
Other rubbish (i.e. black bags) is considered 'Illegal Dumping'. This is always
recorded at pickup and charged back to our community via our rates
It is a Kaipara District Council By-law that the pre-paid blue rubbish
bags may be placed kerbside ONLY on rubbish collection days
Once again, we ask everyone to recycle whenever possible and be considerate
with your rubbish these holidays.
Keep Kaipara clean and green.

HISTORICAL CORNER
Francis of Assisi introduced the world to Christmas 800years ago
‘Yes, St. Francis of Assisi introduced the world to the live Nativity scene (crib
or *crèche*) at Greccio, Italy, in 1223, marking its 800th anniversary in 2023, to
help people visualize Jesus's humble birth, a tradition that evolved from his
vision of Bethlehem and spread globally, influencing how Christmas is
celebrated with manger scenes.
What St. Francis Did
Inspired by the Holy Land: After a pilgrimage, Francis wanted to experience
the poverty and humility of Jesus's birth.
Created a Live Scene: In a cave in Greccio on Christmas Eve, he arranged a
manger with hay, an ox, and an ass, and had people play Mary, Joseph, and
other biblical figures.
Emphasised Humility: His goal was to bring the reality of the Incarnation (God
becoming human) to life, making God's love tangible and relatable.
The Impact
Sparked a Tradition: This event became the first Nativity scene, a practice that
quickly spread through the Franciscan order and beyond.
Global Celebration: Today, Nativity scenes (cribs or crèches) featuring
figurines or live actors are cherished in churches and homes worldwide, a direct
legacy of Francis's innovation.
While he didn't invent the idea of the Nativity, St. Francis created the first
tangible, living representation, making the Christmas story deeply personal and
visual for everyone, a tradition celebrated for 800 years’. Ref. Google AI

KAIWAKA SCHOOL PTA
The Kaiwaka School Parents Teachers Assn may
be small, but we’re a dedicated team who bring
extra fun, support, and opportunities to our
school through fundraising! We’d love to share a snapshot of what an incredible
year it’s been.
This year has been buzzing with energy and success. From selling advertising
signage along the bottom fence to our Cookie Time, Hot Cross Buns and Oxford
Pies fundraisers, plus sizzling up a storm at community and school sausage
sizzles. We also hosted a super-fun Movie Night and an unforgettable
Halloween Disco. While these events help raise funds, our favourite part is
seeing the kids enjoying time together outside the classroom.
Thanks to your support, we’ve been able to provide wet-day classroom
activities, giving teachers funds to stock up on games for winter. We also
supplied participation prizes for KidzBop, ice blocks at school events,
contributed to Waka Prizes and Book Parade prizes, funded new pois for Kapa
Haka and the new beautiful artwork you would have seen displayed at
Prizegiving for the new building, and we also cover the trophies for prizegiving
as well as Year 6 leavers books.
As we head into 2026, we’re excited to be a sponsor for Duffy Books, and
continuing working with Principal Sharlene and the amazing teaching team to
make our school an even better place for our tamariki. ~ Kaiwaka School PTA.

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
DARGAVILLE BOOK SWAP
We had a great day the other week taking all the old
Dargaville books back and selecting the new ones. They're
now on the shelves waiting to be borrowed - come and take
a look, there's some excellent choices there. Many thanks to
the members of the library team who helped out with this
massive effort.
DVDS AND BOOKS FOR SALE
Looking for cheap entertainment? We have discarded books
and DVDs for sale - 50c each, 3 for a dollar, or 20 for
$2.50. Bargain! Come take a look and bring some coins
with you.
BOOK REVIEW
Since my last report I've not read as
much - partly 'cos this report is
earlier than usual, and partly 'cos my
current book is taking me a while to
get through, but I'm really enjoying
it. So I only have a couple to report
on:
The Last Wizards' Ball and All The
Dead Shall Weep, the 5th and 6th
books in the Gunnie Rose series by Charlaine Harris
(pictured). I've yet to meet a Charlaine Harris book I didn't
like, and these are no different. Start the series at #1 An
Easy Death as Lizbeth's life develops along the way.
You can place holds on these and any other borrowable
items in the libraries across the district via the library app
on your smartphone, or via Enterprise*. Ask us if you need
assistance, we're happy to help.
CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS
We will be open on the Monday of Christmas week 4pm to
6pm as usual, then closed until the Monday after New
Year's, 5th January when we'll be open for the normal 4pm
to 6pm, and our usual hours after that**.
In the run-up to the holidays, books borrowed where the
usual due date is when we will be closed will be
automatically extended to 5 January, so items won't go
overdue over the holidays.
You can still return items you've finished with while we're
closed - use the returns slot by the main doors (the ones
facing Kaiwaka Four Square). I will be emptying the box
periodically, so it doesn't get too full.
The library's phone*** will still be answered - it diverts to
my mobile if it's not picked up in the library, so let it ring if
you need to call.
The library team wishes you a good, happy, and safe festive
season, and we look forward to seeing you in the new year.
See you in the library! ~Wendy
